This week I wanted to focus on one thing:

Triangle VGM (Video Game Music) Jam!!

Raleigh, NC – February 16, 2025 @ 5 PM - 8 PM

Address: Hartwell, 620 W South St, Raleigh, NC 27603

Cost: Free!

What is a video game music jam?? I wrote a bit about this for paid subscribers in the first issue, but I wanted to bring it up again here because it’s awesome. It’s what you get when you take a bunch of musicians who like jazz jams and video games and put them in a room together.

These jams are hosted by the Turnabout Players, a local VGM jazz band, and they go like this:

The Turnabout Players kick off the jam by playing some jazz renditions of favorite video game music tracks. At any point throughout the night, attendees can use a sign-up sheet to join a jam. You pick the song you want to jump in on (from an available catalogue) and which instrument you want to play. Any instrument goes. Multiple guests can jump into the same song, too! And the catalogue includes sheet music, so you don’t have to know the form by heart. The jam then evolves into a night of musicians cycling in and out, playing video game music together, and having a great time.

If you’re a musician, bring your instrument! And if you’re not a musician, or you don’t play video games, or you aren’t sure about jazz, you can still go watch and hang out. It’s a good time for everyone, and I bet the atmosphere is enough to surprise you.

Maybe it’s a bit difficult to visualize, so here are some photos I took from a previous jam. You can also join the VGM jam discord here.

That’s it for today. Also, don’t forget about Ibashocon on Feb 22-23! And if you’re a paid subscriber, you will see the cork board link at the bottom of this issue.

Hope to see you at the VGM jam,

– Matias
